Tokens
Tokens are BetterPrompt’s universal unit of usage. They standardize the cost of running prompts across different AI models and vendors, making it easy to understand and manage usage regardless of the underlying provider.
Why Tokens?
Different AI providers (like OpenAI, Gemini, and Grok) have varying pricing for each token types of each model. By converting all usage into tokens, we provide a simple, consistent way to compare and track costs.
How Token Costs Are Calculated
Each time you run a prompt, the total token cost is made up of three parts:
AI Cost
The cost charged by the AI vendor for processing your request.
Platform Cost (10% of AI Cost)
A fee to BetterPrompt for maintaining the platform and its features.
Author Payout (10% of AI Cost)
Paid to the creator of the prompt you used. If you are running your own prompt, this portion is 0%.
Example Calculation
If an AI run costs 50 tokens based on vendor pricing:
- AI Cost: 50 tokens
- Platform Cost: 5 tokens (10% of AI cost)
- Author Payout: 5 tokens (10% of AI cost, unless running your own prompt)
Total: 60 tokens
Key Points
- Tokens make it easy to budget usage across different AI providers.
- Authors earn tokens passively when others use their prompts.
- Platform and payout percentages are always calculated based on the AI cost portion.
